Legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille goes for textures with the famed tone master Bill Frisell on guitar along with Billy Hart member Ben Street on bass and Richard Teitelbaum on piano and synth.
Frisell’s presence is dominant, even when Cyrille is snapping to the militaristic “Coltrane Time” as the guitar strings and musings are like sonic wallpaper. The same goes for the pickings around the cymbals on “Sanctuary” and even though Cyrille goes for slashing and crashing on “Dazzling,” Frisell’s strings seem to be the only power that can stand against it. The pieces are more moods and reflections, as “Song For Andrew No 1” feels like large water paint brush strokes and the electronic noodles on “Manfred” would feel comfortable on a Brian Eno album. Space is the place!
