Autobahn Trio: Out of the Tree

The unorthodox jazz trio of Autobahn has James Hill’s piano and Ian Wright’s drums serving as the foundation for Jeff LaRochelle’s tenor sax and bass clarinet for some moody free flowing originals. The album is divided into short fragments that include quick grooves with bass clarinet on “Interlude” or ambience on “Grounded” while the rhythm team gallops on “Bird Fight” and opens plaintively before crashing and burning on “Reverie.” There is a gentle swing on the Irish tinged “Forgiveness” as LaRochelle’s tenor is warm and clear, while he gets moody on the bass clarinet on “Tribute” with Wright’s throbbing bass. Lots of the pieces start quietly, but end up with dramatic flourishes, making the songs complete pieces in themselves and not just vehicles for blowing. Well thought out.
