Drummer Will Calhoun delivers an 8 song tribute to the various natures of the legendary Elvin Jones on this wide ranging album. He brings together a core team of Christian McBride/b, Antoine Roney/ts-ss, Carlos McKinney/p and Keyon Harrold to revisit material as well as explore new worlds. McBride works overtime with the melody with Harrold on the bopping “EJ Blues” and does a nice little dance with “Whew.” Roney’s tenor gets Coltranesque on “Harmonique” and teams up with Harrold for the framework as Calhoun goes to work during the stretch-out on “Doll of the Bride.” Some 12 string guitar work has Calhoun doubling on the evocative “Sarmastah” and some electronic sounds get added by guest Jan Hammer on “ Destiny.” Calhoun wisely doesn’t waste time imitating the famed drummer, but rather playing with Jones as an inspiration. Impressive!
