The team of Percy Jones/fb, Stephen Moses/dr, Chris Bacas/sax and David Philips/g form the group MJ12. They like the fusion sounds that veer between mid period Weather Report and late King Crimson. Jones’ fretless bass is a rich and dominant force here, creating some exciting lines for Bacas’ soprano sax on the dark and shadowy “Call 911” and the funky “Magic Mist” with a hip tenor sound. Phelps’ guitar can be rock steady as on “Big Daddy’s Road” or create some fuzzy effects with Moses during “The Wow Signal.” The pieces are all intricate, sophisticated and swing cerebrally. Heady stuff with some muscle.
