Matt Baker plays a swinging piano and sings with disarming fashion on this clever collection of material with Joel Frahm/ts, Lage Lund/g, Luques Curtis/b, Obed Calvaire/dr and Bashiri Johnson. The team sounds hip as Frahm’s tenor blows warm smoke on “A Beautiful Friendship” and a rich “Reflections.” Baker’s own touch on the piano is nimble in both the team and solo efforts of “The Apartment Theme” and is reflective on “In The Wee Small Hours.” His voice is cozy on the handful of vocals, sounding like the boy next door on “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Lund’s guitar work teams well with Baker on the conversant “Autumn in New York” making this an album with lots of stars shining.
