Steve Grover: Variations

Drummer and composer Steve Grover brings his band of Frank Carlberg/p, Sean Farias/b, Anderw Rathbun/ts, George Garzone/ts, Duncan Hardy/as Chris Klaxton/tp and Christine Correa/voc to interpret the poetry of Anthony Wilson. Sandwiched between the prose are a  pair of instrumentals, both delivering hints of Monk on the angular “Forever Interlude” and bouncy “Interlude”. Correa’s voice is placid and dreamy, veering out of the horns like a sunset on “Illumination” and bopping with Farias on “Space.” Grover keeps the pulse easy and even on the gentle “Let There Be Darkness.” The tenors are rich on the reflective “As In Night” while Klaxton’s horn is fervent on “Scales.” An impressive and well thought mix, and with the subject being light and darkness, the themes are cleverly beyond (no pun intended) “Moon and June.”
