Dena Taylor: You’ve Changed

Vocalist Dena Taylor mixes jazz with a bit of country/western here on this album of covers and one new piece. The team of Floyd Domino/key, Ernie Durawa/dr, Terry Hale-Brad Taylor/b, Redd Volkaert/g and Joe Colarusso/sax make well for Taylor to bop with her homey voice on “How High The Moon” while her vibrato goes well with Domino on a bluesy “You’ve Changed.” She takes you to the local Moose lodge as Volkaert twangs along on Merle Haggard’s “Silver Wings,” a countrified read of Ellington’s “I Ain’t Got Nothing But The Blues”  and a late night “Crazy” just before she crosses the tracks and goes old school R&B with Colarusso’s tenor on Buddy Johnson’s “And I Don’t Care Who Knows.” Her jazzy “Speak Low” and slinky “The Masquerade is Over” bode well, showing a great variety of colors on this disc.
