Julia Vorontsova: Over

Is the world ready for Russian “indie” music? Julia Vorontsova will try you out on this album. She writes the material here, and presents it in a variety of settings with Ian Walker/b, Aaron Sterling/dr, Zeke Zima/g and a handful of  strings as she accompanies herself on guitar. Her voice is earthy and folksy-husky,  while the songs range from Eastern Europe Bohemia (“Over” and “Prayer”) to material that makes you want to do a traditional dance (“Oubiiette”). There’s some gentle mourning on “Prayer 2” that brings out the inner Eastern Orthodox in all of us, while a cabaret mood is evoked on “Alps” while shadows form soundscapes on “St. Pete.” Alluringly off the beaten path.
