Ensemble Galilei: From Whence We Came

If you want your Irish and Scottish music to sound like the real thing, the Ensemble Galilei will take you to the Isles and back. Comprised of Isaac Alderson/pepes-fl-whist, Ryan McKasson/fid, Kathryn Montoya/rec-whist, Jackie Moran/perc-banj, Sue Richards/harp and Carolyn Surrick/viola, they mix and match amongst themselves to create stately versions of traditional tunes, taking you to another time and place. Hits from the 17th Century are delivered as flutes and percussion dances on “John Come Kiss Me Know” and strings pluck along with a pastoral flute on the traditional Swedish piece “Innestafrid efter Arvid Brannlund.” Some fiery rhythms are delivered with fervent pipes on traditional Irish pieces such as “ The Collier’s Reel” and “Last Night’s Fun” and the banj sturs its’ stuff on “Sophies Slip Jig.” As with all things from the Isles, a hymn keeps things in perspective, and the lovely and longing “Be Thou My Vision” is delivered in chamber style to make you want to get to the church on time. Excellent travelling of time and location.
