Harris Einsenstadt: Canada Day IV

Here’s a cool and subtle collection of originals by a quintet lead by drummer/composer Harris Eisenstadt and his team of Nate Wooley/tp, Matt Buder/ts, Chris Dingman/vibe and Pascal Niggen Kemper/b. The moods get shadowy on “After Several Snowstorms” and the horns meld together on the lonely “Sometimes It’s Hard to Get Dressed in the Morning.” A nice bass line is provided by Niggenkemper on that tune, as well as on the soft and long toned “Life’s Hurtling Passage Onward.” Dingman’s vibes resonate on the angular “Let’s Say It Comes in Wives” and shimmer on “What’s Equal to What.” The horns get squawky on the fluttery “What Can be Set to the Side” but for the most part the moods are impressionistic and understated. Subtle in thought and deed.
