Bill Warfield and the Hell’s Kitchen Funk Orchestrea: Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Trumpeter Bill Warfield leads a fun loving and extroverted 8-9 piece band rotates with members, but never in attitude. You get a straight shooting take of the famed Zawinul title track, with some humming B3 provided by Jakub Zomer, while Randy Brecker’s “Some Skunk Funk” has an irresistibly infectious back beat for Glenn Cashman’s searing tenor. The back beat gets heavy for “Freedom Jazz Dance” and you get to the church on time for the gospel drenched “Cry Me a River.” Warfield’s horn shines on the hip and sleek “Whisper Not” and his flugelhorn is ready for Freddie on the smooth as silk take of “People Make the World Go Round.” A toe tapping delight.
