Here are a couple a bands that mix jazz with soul grooves.
Bastet consists of Justin Rock/g, Mike Quigg/dr, Guilio Cetto/b and Tim Lin/sax. On this release that mix tensile and restless rhythms that form an intriguing contrast to Lin’s tenor that holds back just a tad on “In Violet” “Above it All” and “In The Moonlight.” Rock’s guitar slides over the deeply grooved rivulet on “Wallflower” and the band does some impressive straightahead bop with Quigg’s crisp drumming on the post modern title track. As lovely a mix of sounds and grooves as sweet and sour sauce.
Guitarist Davide Tammaro brings together Panagiotis Andreou/b-voc, Alex Han/as, Pasquale Strizzi/key, Jake Sherman/B3 and Andrew Atkinson/dr for set that mixes earthy blues with exciting 70s-styled fusion. Tammaro gets a bit rock infused on “ Jungle” and the team gets fujky for Han’s beefy sax on”Choices.” Some funky bass lines counteract the eerie guitar sounds on “A Wise Man” while Andreou lays out a nifty solo on the driving “Keep Door Closed.” A gospel feel sways into the bluesy and laconic “Sleepy” and the juices are jumping on the upbeat and energetic “Brooklyn.” A nice collection of American visions.
