Here’s an unorthodox trio for you: Matt Lavelle mixes various horns along with alto clarinet, while Jack DeSalvo supplies the cello, guitar and mandola and Tom Cabrera hits anything ranging from a drum to the rik on seven originals that are high on interplaying free improvisations. Lavelle’s horn is lonely as DeSalvo’s string trudge along on “Seth Dance” Brushes and bowed bass supply a variable path for a yearning alto clarinet on “Counterparts…” while the plucking strings hold up a gasping horn on “Reincarnational Civilizations.” Percussion and bass rumble and tumble together on “The Nature of Mass Events” and morose mood swings delivered by the bow on “Alternate Presents and Multiple Focus” set the tone for longing and languished utterances from Lavelle. Lots of long shadows against the bedroom walls here.
