This album is subtitled “The exciting, swinging piano music of…” and with a gauntlet thrown down like that, pianist Joe Alterman has some work ahead of him. He more than lives up to the brand, as he tems up with Gregory Hutchinson/dr, Reuben Rogers/b and Houston Person/ts for a mix of solo, trio, duet and quartet pieces that mix the rococo frills of an Art Tatum with the bluesy swing of a Wynton Kelly. He crates a hip little Red Garland groove on athe lithe “Blue Moon” while sounding nostalgic as he trills on a trio read of “Other Voices.” A cheerful gospel is felt on “Hard Times’ and when he goes solo on “I’ll Let You Know,” he feels thoughtful on every note and space. A duet with Person on “Moonlight Becomes You” includes a gentle intro before the two create some delicate ambience, while Person rolls in like a San Francisco fog on a major subtoned delight on ”This Time The Dreams On Me.” Hutchinson creates a nifty pattern for Alterman to dance over on the leader’s “Georgia Sunset” whle the rhythm team chimes for Person’s earthy horn on the soulful “For Once In My Life.” This one’s a joy to behold! When’s he hitting LA?
