He’s listed as one of the top 30 guitarists in music, but on this album Mark Knopfler emphasizes moods and lyrics on a subtle, subdued and quietly swinging album. Along with long time partner Guy Fletcher/key, Knopfler brings on board John McCusker/v, Mike McGoldrick/fl, Glenn Worf/b and Ian Thomas along with guests such as vocalist Ruth Moody, saxist Nigel Hitchcock and others.
The song themes cover a wide rnge of topics from youthful vigor on “Laughs and Jokes…” to longsuffering love on “Wherever I Go” along with tributes to Beryl Bainbridge and Basil Bunting in between. Knopfler’s vocal delivery is like of a minstrel in an Irish pub, intimate and almost conversational. Musically, you get some vintage 50s jazzy blues a la Wes Montgomery on “Laughs…” or an easy rumbling blues on “Skydiver” while “River Towns” delivers atmospheric and pastoral folk themes. Lots of the material is so cozy and reflective that you’ll think you’re in a local watering hole, as Knopfler delivers folksy tunes such as “Basil” or a Nashville-brewed “Lights of Taormina.” Hints of his earlier rock days come after a Dublin-esque intro to the more assertive “Beryle” and the easy rocker “Broken Bones.” The closing “Wherever I Go” with Ruth Moody is a haunting romantic and tender piece; making this disc feel like you’re with an old friend.
