The two piece band here consists of Jeremy Harrell and Nathan Singleton who specialize in “roots rock”which means having a foot in the tradition of earthy blues as well as having modern indie tendencies. The pull in both directions is felt on this album, which has Singleton’s voice in settings ranging from straightahead rock as on “Number One” while rumbling drums create some thunder on “Blacked Out Windows” and “Keys to the Kingdom.” On the other side of town, you get some rich finger picking with slide guitar straight from the Delta on “The Winning Side” and “Plow Song” while the two genres intersect pretty well on “Let the Love Flow Down.” The songs themselves touch on themes of looking for the meaning of life in the modern world, with many spiritual references, again, a sort of modernized read of the classic “booze, broads and the devil” themes from times past. A pretty good mix in the glass.
