Live at Knebworth: The Best British Rock Concert Of All Time

Pretty good truth in advertising here. Back in 1990 a the Knebworth House was host to 120,000 fans in support of a benefit concert for the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and Brit School of Performing Arts. The event was to present all of the winners for the Silver Clef Award (Sort of like the US version of the Grammy) for the best rock bands, so (almost) all the winners from 1976 to 1990 got together for one massive concert. The impressive lineup includes Genesis, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, a “pre-Sir” Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Elton John and even Cliff Richards.

Highlights? Whew! Plant doing “Rock and Roll” with Jimmy Page has to be up there, as well as Mark Knopfler jamming with Eric Clapton for a couple of tunes. McCartney and his wife are rocking out on “Birthday” and “Coming Up,” while Cliff Richards drinks from the Fountain of Youth on”Good Golly Miss Molly,” sounding younger and more energetic than most of the rockers half his age. Pink Floyd is sans Roger Waters, but still sounds wonderfully desultory on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” and Phil Collins does a  nice solo job on ”In The Air Tonight” and works with his buddies on Genesis for “Throwing It All Away.” Everyone sounds energetic and inspired, and if you’re a rock or blues fan, you’re gonna watch this historic gig with your friends a bunch of times.
