Glenn Wilson: Timely

Baritone saxist Glenn Wilson brings his molasses thick sound to team up with John D’earth/tp-fh, John Toomey/p, Jimmy Masters/b and Tony Martucci/dr for a mix of originals and obscure covers. The band shows its bebop roots and parties like it’s 1949 on joyful cookers “Timely” and the snappy “Dylan’s Delight” which features D’Earth’s hip horn. There’s a deep groove of mystique that Masters digs with a pick axe for the bari and Toomey’s travels into the sub tropics on “To Wisdom The  Prize,” while the pianist weaves and spins on Bob Dorough’s “Nothing Like You.” Martucci rides the wagon train with a whip as he cracks along with D’Earth on the crisp “Sightseeing.” The rich  horns meld together like apple butter and syrup on waffles during the bluesy “Fat Beat” and Pepper Adams journey on “Diabolique II.” Rich and delightfully filling.
