Tom Trio: Radical Moves

Polish trumpeter Tomasz Dabrowski has a sweet tone akin to Kenny Dorham & Blue Mitchell, sounds you don’t run across these days. He uses it in a more of a free environment in this trio setting with Nils Bo Davidson/b and Anders Mogensen/dr for these 10 originals. The spaciousness of the team makes pieces like the languid “Monnings” quite lyrical, yet the band never gets too far into the outer reachers. Davidson sets a nicle bluesy groove on the funky “Clocks” and he teams up with Mogensen’s cybals to creat a swell of gentle waves for Dabrowki’s horn to gently float over. A hint of Mingus assertiveness crops up on “No Loitering Please” and the leader has his trumpet p op like a pin on a balloon while the drums lead a chardge on “radical Moves.” White caps of agitation serve for a backdrop for Dabrowski’s droplets of rain on “Adult Things” and the album closes with a flexibly free “Pardon To Tu.” Impressive in holding back by letting melody and lyricism control the urge to splurge.
