Phil Chester has a sweet and warm sound on soprano and alto sax, something rarely heard these days, and his tone on tenor is rich and cozy. He leads a joyful band of Bob Quaranta/p, Ian Froman/dr, Leo Huppert-Joe Fitzgerald/g with the enriching addition of Katie Jacoby/vio and Tomas Ulrich/cel to weave a rich tapestry of alluring musical cloths. His alto squeezes out notes like grapefruit seeds on the peppy “Open Door Samba” and along with the sashaying brushes on “Pastor” while his tenor hops along merrily on the jauntying “ April Bossa.” Quaranta’s piano chimes daintily on “Water” and the rhythm team gets a bit funky on the assertive “Round The Block,” but for the most part you’re in for an afternoon sipping a lime punch in a sun drenched plaza as on the earthy “Kyrie” or the sepia toned “Second Son.” Romantic rhumbas mix with sensuous sambas making it tough to stay sitting during this album that reminds you that music was meant for making you do something besides sit in a chair and watch the musicians. This music begs participation.
