Geoff McBride: Journey To The Soul

Geoff McBride has a rich and flexible tenor voice, and uses it well in this varied collection of soul jazz tunes. The band consists of Trammell Starks/key, Chris Blackwell/g, Scott Meeder/dr and Joseph Patrick Moore-Sam Simms/b along with a rotating horn section and collection of background vocalists. Much of the material is composed by Sam Mizel, and McBride’s earnest deliver works well on the hip-hopish R&B “My Angel” as well as the romantic piano with strings “Walk Away.” Good natured synth riffs get funky on the soul fascinated “When You Got Love” and McBride sounds warm and assuring on the string laden “Wipe Your Tears Away.” He gets into a hip little doo-wop thing that works well on the endearing “At Last,” and even better was the clever call  for him to take on Dave Mason’s classic “Feelin’ Alright” with a snappy horn section and McBride getting down to business. All through the session, he sings like he means it, with his heart on his sleeve and a song literally in his heart.
