Paul Jones does triple chores here as he plays a warm and thick tenor, composes most of the material here, and leads the band of Alex LoRe/as, Matt Davis/g, Sullivan Fortner/p, Jimmy Macbride/dr and Johannes Felscher/b in the process of this album. The NYC based leader displays his wares well with a fluffy sound with aFortner on a gracious “Women/Hey, It’s Me You’re Talking To” that goes from rubatto to snappy bop at the drop of rim shot. The rhythm team is able to create rich rivulets of a groove, making gentle ripples that flow for Davis on “Short History” whle also bearing down hard as Macbride digs deep for the leader on ”At the Lighthouse” and “On the Road.” The sole cover, “I Could Write a Book” includes some clever counter melodies between Davis LoRe and Jones while the band dives a soulful strut on the toe tapping “Let’s Go.” Lots of fresh music to appreciate here.
