Pianist Rich Pellegrin leads a flexible band of R. Scott Morning/tp, Neil Welch/ts, Evan Flory-Barnes/b and Chris Icasiano/dr through the second volume of a “Three Part Odyssey” trilogy. Two of the tree “Episodes” have two parts, which means they have similar themes produced by the rhythm team, but the horns take them into different directions. “Intention” and “Affirmation” of the first Episode has an attractive groove that features the horns first fairly tentatively, then following up with long secure lines and tones while Flory-Barnes’ bass gets more restless as the themes move on. A calmness on “Hymn” and “Vigil” includes Morning’s warm trumpet and lyrical cascades by the rhythm section while “Vigil” opens up with a lovely intro by Welch’s tenor. Things get a bit busy and chaotic on the closing “Epilogue” with Icasiano getting quite thunderous and creating an avalanche which Welch and Morning slide along for the ride. Intriguing themes and variations.
