Joanne Tatham: Out of My Dreams

You know a record is going to be filled with hep swing if Mark Winkler is producing it, and voila! here’s an album by husky toned Joanne Tatham that is a real finger snapping winner. She and Winkler brought together some of LA’s finest to play: tamir Hendelman/p, John Clayton/b, Peter Erskine/dr and Bob Sheppard/sax are just a handful of the studio studs that populate this session. As for Tatham herself, she’s got a cheerful and chesty sound and likes to do wordless intros that create mood to be woo-ed on the dreamy “You Taught My Heart to Sing” and the cheerful latin “Without Him (Without Her).” She sounds as hip as a Jet or a Shark with Clayton and Hendelman on the sly “Cool” with guitarist Marcel Camargo gets intimate and cozy on “You’re Sensational.” She likes to sound like she’s dreaming and comes across like one on “It’s a Lonely Place” with Sheppard’s tenor while going wanderlust on “Double Life.” She’s got the feel, but also the enunciation to make you appreciate what she’s conveying in delivery. You’ll like her!
