Here are a couple releases from guys that plug in their 6 stringers with a vengeance.
Gibson guitarist Greg Skaff fronts (mostly) a trio with Pat Bianchi/B3 and Ralph Peterson/dr through some hard driving burners on this session. The band snaps and bends like Beyonce’s dancers on “Beehive” and the title track, with some deft and electrifying interplay being displayed. Peterson gets spotlighted on “Invocation,” while Skaff’s acoustic delicacy is displayed subtly on Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday.” They can bop with the best on Monk’s “Bye-Ya” and pop the clutch into overdrive on “Dual Force.” Cruising, baby!
If you’re more inclined towards the Fender side of life, Dave Fields will give you ample supply. Influenced by the likes of Beck and Hendrix, he comes across as a classic 70s blues rocker with Andy Huenerberg/b, Vladimir Barsky/key and Kenny Soule/dr. Dressed in black leather, he looks and plays like an opening act for Edgar Winter or Bad Company. Didn’t I see him play at the Long Beach Arena? Anyway, if you want to add to your Johnny Winter collection, look no further.
