Bebel Gilberto: Tudo

FINALLY! This is the Bebel Gilberto album that you hope that her gene pool could produce. No slick pop or synthesizers dominating the scene. Here she reunites with producer Mario Caldato Jr and delivwrs an acoustic collection of samba and jazz, old and new and even a ringer or two. She does an exquisitely sensuous take of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” as the biggest surprise, and it’s a real triumph. Her own material such as “Nada Nao” with loads of percussion along with guitar and bass and the cheerful “Somewhere Else”  is linked to the tradition yet also sounds forward looking. She does wonders with Bonfa’s “Saudade Vem Correndo” and displays vocal elegance and grace on Jobim’s “Vivo Sonhando” that is worthy of anything done in the last generation of when “Bossa” was “Nova.” This one delivers the goods in spades!
