What we’ve got here is the final night of 10 sold out performances of the old, but not dead (mostly), Monty Python team of John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin along with cohort Carol Cleveland and films of Graham Chapman at The O2 in London. The show is mostly a love fest, mixing vintage TV skits with updated favorites and golden oldies and even a couple newies.
Yes, you’ve got The Dead Parrot, the Lumberjack Song, Nudge-Nudge, the Bruces as well as what really nobody expected, The Spanish Inquisition Skit. Spam is down with lots of joy, and you’ve even got some singalongs with a couple of very cheeky dance numbers. The gents (and lady) feel like a pair of old and cozy slippers, not being the cutting edge as they were but the grandfather going through his photo album. Do the jokes hold up well? It’s so hard to say, as they are now deeply imbedded as part of our angst. If you’re a Baby Boomer (as most of the audience obviously is) you know these skits by the first consonant, and revel in your familiarity with it. Still, the fish slapping and silly walks are a joy as always. Some things never change!
