Markus James: Head For The Hills

Guitarist Markus James covers a National Geographic area of musical territory here with a rotating team of drummers and percussionists including Junior Kimbrough, Kinney Kimbrough, RL  Boyce, Marlon Green and Aubrey “Bill” Turner. James himself plays a slew of guitars, both acoustic and electric, a gourd banjo, slide dulcimer,  a beatbox, a harp and a 3-string cigarbox guitar and he creates more colors than a kaleidoscope here with songs ranging from garage rock on “Just Say Yes” to earthy back porch picking during “For Blind Willie.” Some of the tuens such as “Woke Me” sound like a poor man’s Cream, while a couple of rough and raw riffs make “Candyland Refugee” an “Diddley Bow and Buckets” make you feel the dirt between your toes. The mix of percussion and acoustic strings on a few of the tracks create some exciting sparks to fly as on the ominous “Fallin From the Sky.” Mixing sounds from the deep south to Mali, James takes you on a stringed tour of the world. You’ll find something on this disc you haven’t heard before, and it’s worth it for that alone, and cheaper than airfare.
