Jonathan Butler: Grace and Mercy

Sometimes, you just need a record to pick you up and change your focus. Smooth jazz guitarist Johathan Butler succeeds on that level on this latest release. His voice is reminiscent of a young George Benson, but his subject matter and vibe is more closely linked to Andre’ Crouch. Behind an optimistic and upbeat band of Dan Lutz/b, Kevin Teawsley/key and  Gorden Campbell/dr Butler strums and  picks his 6 stringer while singing passionately about his God and Saviour. Cooking little pieces like “Who Is Like The Lord” make scriptural passes finger snapping, while “I Stand on the Word” is a joyful declaration of faith that could even make Dawkins attend church. His heartfelt and passionate paeans “Moments of Worship” and “Acoustic Repise” are deeply intimate connections between man and God, making the disc close on an inspiringly soulful moment. Even if smooth jazz isn’t your thing, God sure is!
