Trombonist Peter Lin explores his musical identity as a Tawianese-American on this richly cultural collection of original compositions performed by a core Erena Terakuo/as-fl, Mike Bond/p, Daseul Kim/b Wen-Tin Wu/dr with guests My Tam Huynh/voc and Brandon Choi/tp.
The eleven originals mix modern post bop ideas with some rich Asian spices on harmonies and melodies, seamlessly sewn together. Choi’s trumpet is sweet and pretty over Wu’s brushes on “A Town With An Ocean View” and hip with the leader on a California Cool “Moonlight Densestu”. Huynh is soulfully expressive on a funky “Anh Dau Em Do” and classy as she glides around Kim’s bass on “Tank”. Lin himself has a warm and buttery sound, brooding on “Dahil Sa Iyo” and bopping delightfully on “”Magpie’s New Year’s Day”. Flavorful dishes.
