Tim Berne-Tom Rainey-Gregg Belisle-Chi: Yikes Too

The threesome of alto saxist Tim Berne, drummer Tom Rainey and guitarist Gregg Belisle-Chi are caught recorded in studio and at a concert in Seattle’s Royal Room. Especially considering how “improvised” each tune is, the songs that are replicated in front of an audience are not too dissimilar from the studio versions. Both reads of “Oddly Enough” feature the acidic unison lines of guitar and sax, driven heavily by Rainey and the elliptical “Bat Channel” continues its static rubato in both environs. Other themes seem like they are taken out of the last note of King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” as “Sorry Variations” and “Yikes 2”  overflow with cacophonic chaos, and the shrill “Guitar Star” and “Julius  Hemphill” are Wagnerian in their pathos. Only the subdued “Middle Seat Blues” show elements of restraint, but if catharsis is your reason for taking in music, this is the place.
