Pianist Sultan Stevenson brings his faith to the jazz table on this collection of Biblical themes with a trio of Jacob Gryn/b and Joel Waters/dr occassional joined on the pulpit with Soweto Kinch/ts and Josh Short/tp-fh. His solo touch has a Sunday morning feel on a reflective “arise” while with a trio, he’s reflective on the recitative “I Believe” and thoughtful for a blue hued “Purpose”. With the horns, there’s a celbrative serentity to “El Roi”, and an easy flow on the bopping “Unspeakable Happiness” and a thoughtful “A Region In My Mind” with the horns blending and soloing like simpatico brothers. The phrase “El Roi” comes from one of the names describing God in the Bible, meaning “The God Of Sight”, and for Stevenson, believing is seeing, as well as hearing.
