Creating velvety textures and rich colors, the saxophone team of Nathan Bogert/ss, Michael Shults/as, Nick Zoulek/ts and Drew Whiting/bs interpret modern compositions with grace and style. There are moments of solos and duets, but the foursome work as a collection of stallions carrying a wagon of themes, veering in and out of each other in support. Evan Williams’ “Quartet For Saxophones”, for example, is a seven part suite that includes complex directions, tricky turns and even some use of the sax pads for extra percussion. Ellingtonian and palpable pleasures are heard on Chen Yi’s “Distance Can’t Keep Us Apart” and Emma O’Hallaroan’s “Night Music” have the reeds climb and descend like a UPS delivery man in an apartment building. Bogert is almost electronically toned on the title piece and is featured on a sparkling “The Gaps Between” with Whiting holding the foundation on the Holtzian “Unrelenting Universe”. Polished brass.
