Kim Waters: Time 2 Groove

Playing tenor, soprano and mostly alto sax, Kim Waters rides a longboard of whitecapped waves on this album of originals. He’s teamed with a funkified mix of Chris Davis/key-prog, Bernd Schenhart/g and vocalist Raynard Gibson, while supplying just about every other beat, pulse and background wacka wooka.

His alto sax is super sleek on the jungle boogie’d “The Pacemaker” and supplies a luscious solo intro stage right on the warm “A Pure Heart (Song For My Mother)”. There are some relentless bass lines that you just won’t want to escape from, such as the Earth Wind and Fire’d “I Once Had Your Love” with Waters creating a textured background in both sax and voice, as well as the rivulet of the title track featuring some percolating percussion.

Then, we’ve got some impressive soprano action, layered and multi-dimensioned veering around the synth’d pulse of “Palm City”, while his thick molasses of a tenor takes you into Teddy Pendergrass territory on the slinky “Just A Thought”. Raynard Gibson brings in some hushed and bedroom eyes vocals to “Little Things” while Barnd Schoenhart’s guitar work on “Their Smile (Song For My Twins)” perfectly frames Water’s white caps. This guy digs deep enough to hit magma.
