Josephine Davies & The Enso Ensemble: The Celtic Wheel of the Year Suite

Composer/conductor Josephine Davis leads a modern sounding big band through a collection of well crafted originals, concentrating on rich charts and section work, with clever solos squeezed in, and her own tenor sax getting wild around Shane Forbes’ funky bass line of Mabon. The bass section is warm andfluffyon”Imbolc” leading into a warm and bright “Ostara” for Helea Kay’s on tenor work. Nick Smart brings rich brass embers to “Lamas” and Chillingworth’s bright soprano sax sears around the muted brass on “Samhain” . Some caroming drum work takes the forefront with Shane Forbes on “Gaia’s Breath and the sections form inviting colors around the pretty “EOS”. The album reflects the various seasons of the Celtic Calendar, with it always sounding like warm weather.
