Texas dry rub BBQ’d jazz is served on a hot plate for a swinging gig at Fort Worth’s Caravan of Dreams with Ray Charles sideman David “Fathead” Newman/as teamed with Ellis Marsalis/p and Cornell Dupree/g along with James Clay//ts, Leroy Cooper/bars, Dennis Dotson/tp, Chuck Rainey/b, and George Rains/dr. The tunes all have that classic swampy jazz mixed with R&B, and the sauces is a perfect blend of sweet and hot. Newman’s sax wails on the shuffling blues of “Buster’s Tune”, and his flute does h ip boogaloo on “”13th Floor”. Marsalis does a couple gorgeous sonatas, dreamy on “These Foolish Things” and regretful on ‘Lush Life”, while Dupree grinds out a jubilant “Two Bones and A Pick”. The bopping classic “Night In Tunisia” has the horns ricocheting off the walls like the shootout at OK Corral. How did I miss this gig?
