Sullivan Fortner: Southern Nights

After releasing an ambitious double album that included electronic experimentation, pianist Sullivan Fortner returns to the comfort food of a trio with Marcus Gilmore/dr and Peter Washington/b. The arrangements here of some standards as well as his own material are quite clever, hitting the ground running with a Crescent City stride of Allen Toussaint’s title piece. He’s romantic on “Tres Palabras”, dark blue on “Waltz For Monk” and in post bopping drive for “Organ Grinder”. His own “(Bar Une” is a gas, with Clifford Brown’s “Daahoud” a clutch  popper. Lyrical with lightning.
