The beauty of duets is that there is no where to hide, and trust is the connecting ingredient. This collection from pianist Bob James and saxist Dave Koz is a beaut, filled with communication and lyricism. The collection mixes originals with standards and both work wonderfully well. Of the latter, “My Ship” is a melodious delight, with Koz filled with gentleness, while “All The Way” is pensive and personal. The two get cozy on a nostalgic “ Smile” and venture into Tin Pan Alley on a cheerful “Sunny Side Of The Street”.
The originals are just as friendly, as James is in rich stride on “Sommation” and taking you to the Old World on “Fontaine d”Alice” while Koz goes bohemian on a Left Bank shot of “Rue de Rivoli”. If these guys tour together, I’m in line!
