Rachiel Therrien: Mi Hogar II

French-Canadian trumpeter Rachel Therrien continues her exploration of Latin Jazz like she was born and raised somewhere quite south of both the Canadian and US borders. She mixes and matches with pianists Manuel Valera/Danae Olano/Willy Soto Barreto/Andy Rubal and bassists John Benitez/Roberto Riveron/Luis Izquierdo/Alex Bellagarde, a pair of vocalists, violinist Elizabeth Rodriguez, a handful of horns and a busload of percussionists that must have had the axle close to the ground. Her horn is sweet and fluffy around Rodriguez and Madgelys Savigne’s batas  on the folksy “Orun”  while Rafi Malkiel’s trombone veers around Valeria’s ivories on the scintillating “Soucy”. Luis Izuierdo’s electric bass creates a hip rivulet on “Back  Home” and the congas and bongos and bouncing like a box of ping pong balls breaking open on the relentless “Fiestas Campesinas”. Rich vocals by Mireya and Andy Ramos form a romantic closing on “Beauty Free”, making for some fine Latin loving on this session.
