LA-based vocalist Judy Wexler brings in some neighborhood friends for some classy reads of standards and obscurities. Wexler uses phrasing and nuance instead of chops and range to get her points across, and it works well teamed with Jeff Colella/p, Danny Janklow/sax-fl, Bob Sheppard/ss-cl, Jay Jennings/tp-f, Larry Koonse/g Gabe Davis/b and Steve Haas/dr. She gets slinky with Sheppard’s clarinet as she slides around ”Dance Me To The End Of Love” and goes noirish with Jennings for “You Stepped Out of A Dream” the cute and upbeat “No Wonder” mixes pop and warmth, while she digs in hard on the bopping Jazz Messengerish “Firm Roots (Are What You Need To Win”. Street savvy over Hass’ brushes on “Never Will I Marry” she’s gracious and inviting with Koonse and Colella for “Never Will I Marry”. Vocal flicks of the wrist to catch your eyes and ears.
