Master of both acoustic and electric bass (be it 4 string, 5 or beyond), John Patitucci teams up with longtime mate from his Wayne Shorter days, Brian Blade , as well as fellow vet Chris Potter on a wide and luminous collection of originals.
His electric bass work is a wonder, teaming with Blade’s high hat for a Shaft-ish groove for Potter’s mix of reeds on” Lipim” or getting into a Monkish mood with Potter’s soprano on a fun “Spirit Fall”, while casting reflective shadows on “Thoughts and Dreams”. His acoustic sound is big and visceral, nimble with Porter’s tenor on “Think Fast” and bluesy on the jamming “Pole Star”. Potter gts Trane-ish on “House Of Jade” while his bass clarinet work gets into the world of magma on the abstract rubato of “Light In The Darkness”. The team is a hoot when they dig in on the calypso’d “Sonrise” and totally hip on ‘Deluge”. This is an album of what The Big Boys in the room sound like.
