Saxist Jessica Jones forms a formidable two tenor front line with Tony Jones along with Stomu Takeishi/b and Deszon Claborne/dr on a mix of bopping originals and covers. The free-bop feel is loose and intuitive, hip on the Monkish “Manhattan” and laconic around Claiborne’s rumble on “Little Melonae”. Takeishi’s’ bass is prominent throughout, keeping things in line on the fluid “ Bird’s Word” and around the nifty groove of “Soft Target” while the pair of tenors create a thick mix of harmonies and Sonny Rollins-inspired solos. Deep reeds.
