Something is happening in Latin America with female tenor saxists, as Peruvian Lucia Sarmiento is the latest in the line to get my attention. This album is quite ambitious, mixing and mating with a top line of artists, including Mark Lettieri/g, Ry Dill/g-g, Russ King/key, Pete Henning/dr, Jose Perez/perc and Liz Lester/str. The mood is smooth but not sterile, as Sarmiento’s ton e is rich and mellow as on “Porcelain” and dreamy on the lusciously dreamy “Morning Delight”. The strings work well as drapery on “Look Up” , and Sarmiento shows she can bear down as well, rocking with Lettieri on “Dreamland” while getting fusion on the Weather Reportish “Signal Flow”. As flavorful as lomo saltado.
