From that hotbed of modern jazz, Calgary, Alberta in Canada, we get singer, vocalist and composer Angela Wrigley stampeding through some originals and clever covers on this hip ep. Together with bassist Derek Stoll and drummer Dave Lake, she gives a breathy and passionate take on the upbeat ”Something Simple, while giving a reggae feel on the keyboards to her own catchy “Get Out”. Most fun is when Lake incorporates Miles Davis’ “All Blues” pulse to the intro to a clever and film noir-ish read of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and then goes Mingusy before Wrigley and Lake cascade on the freedom dance read of “If I Should Lose You”. Frisky and fun, and no mess to clean up after.
