The Bad Plus: Complex Emotions

Once the vanguard for today’s jazz piano trios, The Bad Plus has evolved in personnel and style over the years. Yes, the drum heavy sound is still there, here provided by Dave King. But along with founder Red Anderson on bass, the charter member has also added guitarist Ben Monder and tenor saxist Chris Speed, with the band not exactly sounding “like every other” post bop quartet, but simply less distinct than before. Monder’s “Li Po” mixes guitar and trickily ambience, while dashes of vintage Pat MEtheny take place on “Tyrone’s Flamingo” and the big sound of “Deep Water Sharks”. Anderson  gets slinky on “Casa Ben” and Street is strong on the double timed “Cupcakes One”, with a nice chicka boom belted out on “French  Horns”. In search of new lands.
