Laird Jackson: Life

Vocalist Laird Jackson puts together a richly creative mosaic of world sounds on this album that mixes and matches ideas and musicians. There’s a core of Jeff Haynes/perc-b, John Smith-Marvi Sweell-Brandon Gross, but after that, strings, horns and various percussions come in for moe cameos than an Agatha Christie mystery. The songs themselves have her at times with a choir as on “I Believe” or supplemented by a folksy violin as on “Rainbows”. A simple kalimba guides her through the dreamy “Suhaili” and she goes it all alone on a riveting “The Wind”. Earthy vocals create a frame for “Dusk” and a hurdy gurdy traipses through the rural “Rounding The Sun”. She takes you on a lot of journeys, and each place is worth staying at for awhile.
