Trombonist and composer Euan Edmonds puts together a rich team of Clark Gibson/as, Dustin Laurenzi/ts, Paul Bedal/p, Sam Peters/b and Neil Hemphill/dr for an impressionistic album that is centered around an elegiac six part “Beyond Hope and Fear” suite. Interludes of piano and drums, as well as a horned rubato closing and alto sax led “Intro” separate a soulful title peace that includes rich tenor work and a bopping “Endurance” that has the leader bouncing through Hemphill’s cymbals. Peters and Bedal get into a romantic harmony for “Broken Notions” with the pianist flowing lovingly around the gentle solos by Edmonds and Laurenzi on “Jordan and Mariea”. Rich harmonies swing easy on “Wayfarer” and the colors go pastel for “Violet”. A long reach that grasps the destination.
