Peter Somuah: Highlife

Ghanian bred trumpeter Peter Somuah mixes cultures and sounds on this album joined with Jesse Schilderink/ts, Antonde Bruin/key, Jens Meijer/dr, Danny Rombout/perc, Marijn van de Ven/b, Lamisi Akuka/voc, Thomas Botchway/perc, Pat Thomas-GyeduBlay Ambolley/voc and Bright Osei Baffour/g. After a spoken tale by Koo Nimo, the songs are reminiscent of a mix of jazz, and Caribbean ideas, with lots of keyboards as Pat Thomas sings on “We Give Thanks”. Schilderink’s tenor is warm on the peppy “Conqueror” and jazz grooved “Chop Chop” with Ambolley’s rich singing. There is plenty of bop, as on ”Mental Slavery”, but all of the songs have that rich Caribbean street feel, mon. Jazzy souls.
