David Haney: Exotic Materials In Development-New Directions in Piano Volumes 1 & 2, David Haney with Dave Storrs Iteration: Exotic Materials, David Haney with Cheryl Pyle, Kirk Knuffke & Dave Sewelson: Exotic Materials Part One & Two

Pianist and composer David Haney releases a surfeit of albums, playing in various combinations ranging from solo to small group. The unifying factor is spontaneity and inquisitiveness, the only question is what size portions you want to ingest

The two albums of Exotic Materials In Development-New Directions In Piano are both made up of sixteen songs each, ranging from just under two minutes to almost six. It claims to be “solo” but I would swear I hear a bass wandering around sometimes, but what actually is recorded is Haney using mallets on the inside of the  piano. There are no leftovers on this meal!. There is also a Krupa like drum beat here and there, with the  “piano” pieces ranging from jaunty stride to fluid impressionism. Well crafted, with just a dash of mischief.

-Haney teams with Dave Storrs and others for seven  more Exotic Materials, with things getting frisky and loose. Haney plays piano, glass bottle, mallets, and Dave is on just about anything that goes bump in the night for dark  pickings, scrapings and scrambling under the bushes.

The pair of albums, with 14 and 11 songs respectively on Redux and Gaslight bring in Cheryl Pyle/fl, Dave Sewelson/bs, Kirk Knuffke/ct and Storrs  on gongs and beyond. Sometimes, there sounds like a kazoo is on the loose, with some pretty flute floats, the tenor goes into subtones and ozone levels, while the sounds swing, sway, and march like a vaudevillian band waiting for Ma Rainey to show up.
