The Jim Self/John Chiodini Duo: Feels So Good

The unlikely duo of Jim Self’s tuba and John Chiodini’s guitar gives an encore album of fun swinging music, bringing in guests to the festivities this time around. Half of the fun here is the song selection, only out-done by how they are delivered. The two are relaxed and buoyant on “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To” and “I Forget” with the mix of the two trading rhythms and solos like ping pong players. After you, Alfonse! Then saxist Steve Marsh comes in for a bopping “Fanciful Dream”, Bill Booth brings his trombone sliding in for “Polkadots and Moonbeams” and Kris Brgh lends is trumpet for a gorgeous “ Riddle of The Mode”. The obscure fluba gets exposure by Self on Lee Morgan’s “Sidewinder”, and everyone jumps into the pool for a wild take of Ornette Coleman’s “Blues Connotation”. Are these guys ever going to tour?!?
